The Science of Well-Being for Parents

  • For these issues, please contact the Coursera Help Center.

  • No. Laurie’s online courses are available to everyone. They don’t carry Yale University credit, grant Yale student status, or come with a Yale transcript. The courses are free, self-paced, and asynchronous. You can start, stop, and restart anytime.

  • No. The suggested timeline is just a guide. You can move through the course entirely at your own pace.

  • All of Laurie’s courses are free to take. There’s never a requirement to pay. Coursera recently changed how courses appear, so the option to audit for free can be harder to find. You don’t need to pay for a certificate to access the full course. To enroll for free, use these exact links:

  • Coursera offers financial aid for many courses. Learn more here. If you don’t qualify or prefer not to apply, you can still take the full course for free without purchasing a certificate.

  • We no longer support the ReWi app or Pattern Health app, and they are no longer available for download.

  • If you’re taking the course on Coursera, we encourage you to post your questions on the Coursera course discussion boards for either The Science of Well-Being, The Science of Well-Being for Teens, or The Science of Well-Being for Parents. This allows us to respond directly and allows other learners to comment on your thoughts. Plus, it's a great way to form a new social connection.

  • No, enrolling as an adult won’t affect the data. You’re welcome to participate! That said, if you’re a parent of a teen, we also invite you to check out our course for parents, The Science of Well-Being for Parents.

  • We regularly share updates when new projects launch. To stay informed, sign up for The Dr. Laurie Santos Newsletter.

  • We really appreciate your offer to help make these resources more accessible. The translation process for Coursera courses is managed entirely by Coursera, not by our team. You can learn more about Coursera’s translation process here.

  • To see if the courses have been translated into your language, search for “Laurie Santos” on Coursera and filter by language. If your language isn’t listed, you can also watch the course videos on YouTube, where automatic subtitles may be available:

  • Thank you for your generosity in wanting to share these resources. Unfortunately, because the course materials are copyrighted and owned by Yale University, translated versions can’t be hosted or distributed outside of Yale or Coursera platforms. You’re welcome to link to Laurie’s official English resources or course videos in your own materials, but please don’t repost or host the files yourself.

  • Yes. You’re welcome to use our courses in your educational or nonprofit programs—as long as participants take the courses directly on Coursera or via our official platforms. • While we don’t formally partner with other colleges, many universities have designed their own courses inspired by Psychology and the Good Life, or by using Laurie’s course “The Science of Well-Being” on Coursera. Faculty are always welcome to reference or assign the course with proper credit to Dr. Laurie Santos and Yale University.

Other Questions

  • These are our favorite notes to receive! Laurie does read and cherish every note, even if she doesn’t have time to respond personally. You can send her a note here.

  • Laurie can’t provide individual therapy or referrals, but we know finding the right therapist can be difficult. A good place to start is the therapist directory and guidance articles at Psychology Today. Their database and FAQs include practical suggestions for choosing someone who’s a good fit.

  • Laurie isn’t able to provide personalized clinical advice or individual sessions. If you’re struggling, we encourage you to connect with a licensed therapist or counselor. You might also find support in relevant episodes of The Happiness Lab — for example, those on languishing, talking to a friend, or learning from relationships.

  • If your question isn’t already addressed in these FAQs, please contact Laurie’s team here.
